When is the best time to visit India – What you Need to Know

Ajanta caves lie in Maharashtra, which is in west-central India. Unlike northern parts of India, which have extremes of climate both in winter and summer, most parts of Maharashtra have a temperate climate. The summer months from March to May see a maximum of 35°C, while during the winter months from October to February temperatures can drop to a minimum of 10-12°C. Monsoons lash the state from July to September.

The best time to visit I the caves at Ajanta would undoubtedly be in the rainy season when the region turns a verdant shade of green. The Sahyadri Ranges, where the Ajanta caves are situated, receive the maximum rainfall in the region. In case you cannot visit Ajanta during these months the other good time would be from October to March, when the weather is very pleasant.

What to wear

There is no fixed dress code in India. The sari is the main attire of Indian women, but the easy-to-wear salwar kameez with dupatta is also commonly worn. The kurta and pyjama, with sandals or leather chappals is typical attire worn by Indian men. However, in large cities western outfits such as trousers, shirts and skirts are common.

For the foreign traveller the thumb rule would be to wear sensible, comfortable clothes that do not attract unnecessary attention. While travelling to western parts of India, loose cotton clothing is apt through the year though light woollens will be required for the winter months.

Before coming to India

There are a few things you need to take care of before travelling to India.

Visa

The tourist visa is normally given for six months. The 15-day single/double-entry visa is issued only to bonafide transit passengers. Tourist groups of not less than four people travelling under the auspices of a recognized travel agency may be considered for a collective tourist visa.

A visa is given for a period for which the passport is valid. So, if the validity of the passport runs out before the visa expires, the visa is not issued. The visa is valid for 180 days from the date of its issue and not from the date of entry into India, unless specified otherwise.

Visa Extension

Visa Extension

The 180-day tourist visa is supposedly non-extendable but can be extended for another 15 days in exigencies. A valid onward ticket must, however; be produced as proof of the intention to depart from India’s shores. The 15-day extension on the 6-month visa is issued by the Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and can be obtained from any of the offices at New Delhi and Mumbai. The FRRO office is open on weekdays from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm. A 15- day extension is given only if confirmed air tickets are not available. No fees are charged.
