Thus they exercise a day-today influence in the lives of the people. It is truly the Land-Divine–but the gods in Kullu are unique in the world, these are the only gods that are ‘human to the core’. Far from sitting in their ivory tower, aloof and beyond reach of the people, they continue to remain a part and parcel of the entire community and village. Like human beings they have their own brothers, sisters, and feel happy when propitiated and show unmistakable signs of anger if ignored. In the secluded village of Malana, which has earned a name for its free and independent nature, with its own upper and lower houses that govern the village and lands, the overall Lord of the village is Jamlu, the village god, who administers justice through his chief priest Fees for the settlement of disputes are given in kind, sheep, goats or drinks. The humanization of the gods stems from the deification of many rishis who performed lapa’ in the valley. The association of the galaxy of divine seers; including Vyas, Kapil Kanad, Vashisht, Kanav, Gautam, Kartik, Mar-kandeya, Narad, Shandil and Sharinga, with the valley make land holier still and ‘vibrantly alive’ as these associations are even now, those engaged in quests of the spirit tirelessy in their efforts to reach the Ultimate-God.
