Most popular road trip in Rajasthan

Jaipur-Shekhawati/Nalagarh

There is a certain magic in travelling through Rajasthan tour package, which is unequalled by most places in the world. As far as the eye can see, the flat desert land stretches featureless except for smooth hillocks and occasional clumps of shrub. Wherever a rocky hill breaks the horizon, the distinct shape of a fort or palace crowns it.

This romantic drive through Rajasthan starts in Jaipur, the royal city of love, legends and love, Join NH 11, linking Bikaner to Jaipur and drive towards Chomu. The road is wide and reasonably well surfaced with tea shops and dhabas, rustic eating places used mainly by truckers, lining both sides of the highway. At Sikar, leave NH II and turn right for Nawalgarh. Sikar is a reasonably sized town with some facilities and you can refuel and stock up on other supplies here. Some centuries ago, Sikar was an important trading town and one of the most prosperous regions under the control of the erstwhile princely rulers of Jaipur state. During that period, an impressive fort and some nice havelis and temples were built here.

The road from Sikar to Nawalgarh is narrow in comparison to NH 11, and the surfacing is also inferior. But this is not really a problem since traffic is lighter. Reach Nawalgarh and drive to the extreme edge of is town, where the Roop Ntwa located.

Shekhawati-Bikaner via the Colorful Towns Of Shekhawati

It’s a grand tour of the Shekhawati region that has rightly been called the ‘open air art gallery and museum’ of Rajasthan. Check out the largest concentration of high quality frescoes and murals in the world, while driving through colourful towns like Dundlod, Mukundgarh, Mandawa, Bissau, Mahansar, etc. The road is dusty and damaged in places, but the desert landscape and absence of traffic makes up for it.

At Fatehpur, join NH 11 again and turn right for Bikaner. The road is flat and fast and passes through an arid desert with some sand dunes literally touching the roads edge. Every now and then there is a patch of scrubland but very little cultivation. Winds whip up the sand and sometimes you see vultures, eagles, or other raptors, perched on the electric poles lining the road. Colourfully dressed women break the starkness of the desert with the favourite shades being bright red, orange and green.

As you approach Bikaner, you begin to see a lot of camels that reign supreme here. Bikaner is also an important base for the Indian army and air force, and long convoys transporting troops and materials are not uncommon. In fact they are as much part of Bikaner as the U magnificent monuments chiseled out of red and yellow sandstone.
