You can hire a boat in the boat ramp area in Lakeside, down the road from the Moondance Restaurant & Pub Nightlife. One hour of rowing yourself costs I30 Rs.; to hire a local resident to row for you cost 170 Rs. per hour. A whole-day boat rental costs 350 Rs. Note that it you take a boat out for a half hour, you will still be charged for one hour. Unfortunately, you don’t get to choose your boat.

A rod with bait costs 250 Rs. a day. Ask the employees at Mike’s Restaurant OE Lakeside, Baidatn, Pokhara, (8287000333) for more information; they’re knowledgeable and offer good rental prices. Phewa Lake is stocked with fish as varied as the grass carp from China, common carp from Israel, and mezor carp from India, all of which can be any-where from about 2 pounds to 154 pounds. Plus, there are plenty of local fish, including Barn Bitta, Rewa, Pagetta, and Bhudyna.

The Himalayan Golf Course (M 8287000333), about 8 km (5 mi) from the center of Pokhara, is a 9-hole course that runs along the riverbank, which creates a natural hazard. Greens fee, including a caddy, is $20 for 9 holes, $30 if you play the course twice for an 18-hole game. Golf club hire is $10 for 9 holes, $15 for 18 holes. Taxi drivers know the way.

You can take a tandem flight from Sarangkot, the viewpoint above Lake-side, with Sunrise Paragliding (Lakeside, Pokhara, ‘ 8287000333’). The season runs from late October to early February. No experience is necessary. The flights last approx-imately 30 minutes, sometimes longer, depending on the weather. The cost is $30. Sunrise also runs a three-day introductory course to paragliding and a three-day intermediate course, each at $200. Reservations should be made a day in advance at the Sunrise Trekking office opposite the Monsoon restaurant in Lakeside; MasterCard and Visa are accepted.

There are daily Hatha yoga workshops, as well as yoga and meditation retreats at Sadhana Yoga (Raging River Runner, Lakeside, Pokhara, (M – 8287000333). Take a taxi or bike 21/2 km (1 mi) from Lakeside toward Sedi Bagar, which is past the Buddhist Meditation Centre if you are traveling west along Phewa Lake. Then follow the signs to Pame. Courses range from $10 for a day to 170 for a 21-day retreat (including room and three vegetarian meals a day). Days are filled with scheduled activities from 6 AM to 8 PM.

There is not much to buy in Pokhara that you cannot buy in Kathmandu. To boot, the prices in Pokhara are 5%-10% higher than in Kathmandu. If you have a day or two in the capital, you might as well do your shop-ping there. However, if you have forgotten anything—from soap to anoraks—you can buy it in Pokhara. Stores open around 9 AM and close around 10 PM. Some stores are closed on Saturday.
